Osho's Early Life and Awakening

Osho was born as Chandra Mohan Jain on December 11, 1931, in Kuchwada, a small village in Madhya Pradesh, India. He was the eldest of eleven children of a Jaina cloth merchant. He grew up in a religious but open-minded family that encouraged his curiosity and independence. He was a brilliant student and a rebellious child, who questioned all social, religious and philosophical beliefs. [^1^] [^3^]

At the age of 21, Osho had a profound spiritual awakening that changed his life. He described it as an experience of cosmic consciousness, where he felt one with existence and realized his true nature. He said: "I became drunk with the divine. That's why I say it is not an experience but an intoxication." After this awakening, he decided to dedicate his life to sharing his insights and helping others to discover their own inner potential.

Osho's Teaching Career and Controversies

Osho studied philosophy at the University of Jabalpur, where he earned his MA degree in 1957. He became a professor of philosophy and a popular public speaker, who challenged the orthodoxy of mainstream religions and ideologies. He also traveled extensively throughout India, meeting with various spiritual teachers and mystics. He became known as Acharya Rajneesh, meaning "teacher of the divine". [^1^] [^2^]

In 1966, Osho resigned from his academic post and became a full-time guru and meditation teacher. He initiated his followers into a new order of sannyasins, who renounced their worldly attachments but not their worldly pleasures. He taught a dynamic form of meditation that involved physical movements, emotional catharsis, silent awareness and celebration. He also advocated a more progressive attitude to sexuality, which earned him the reputation of "the sex guru". He attracted many seekers from India and abroad, especially from the West. [^1^] [^2^]

In 1974, Osho moved to Pune, where he established an ashra
